Defender wins big football award
ON the football field, the strikers (射手) who make the goals win the loudest applause (掌声). Some think they are the only heroes that can get the top awards.
The Italian footballer Fabio Cannavaro has proved (证明) this view wrong. He shows that every player in a match counts. He did this by winning the FIFA (国际足联) Player of the Year award on December 18.
Cannavaro said his prize would give other defenders (后卫) more hope. "From today, every defender can try to get an award like the FIFA World Player because only forwards and midfielders (中场球员) won it before," he said.
The 33-year-old Cannavaro once helped Italy to get its fourth World Cup title. This time, he competed with two strikers Zine Zidane (齐达内) and Rinaldinho. He finally beat them.
When he won the Golden Ball Award last month, a lot of people said this award should have gone to a striker. But Cannavaro has again beaten this view.
Cannavaro learned to play football in a town of Naples, Italy. Later, he became a ball boy at the city's stadium (体育馆) while Diego Maradona played there. That was before he entered the Serie A game in his country.
While the Italian football clubs were criticized (批评) because of scandals (流言), he set a role model by trying his best to do well in every match. It has encouraged other players and given hope to the country's football spirit.
Cannavaro stands out most for his leadership. As captain of Italy at the World Cup, he knew how to bring out the country's defensive tradition. A lot of top defenders were born in Italy.
"I'll tell you a secret to going a long way in a match. It is to rediscover (再度发现) some of the traditional defensive approaches (方法) of Italian football culture," he said.

Pig with a dream
EVEN if you are not a smart student, you should always try your best.
The famous cartoon piglet (小猪) "McDull"is like that. The pink piglet has a birthmark (胎记) on his right eye. He's not very clever, but he has a heart of gold.
The limited editions (珍藏版) of "McDull McMug Series" comic books will come out in February. Maybe you can read one during the winter vacation!
McDull lives in a simple and happy way. He has a lot of dreams, but they never come true. He tries again, but always fails (失败). He will get another dream. He's not perfect (完美的), but he lives his life in a good way. That's why the piglet is so popular!
McDull was created in Hong Kong by Alice Mak (麦家碧) and Brian Tse (谢立文).

The piglet wants to visit the Maldives (马尔代夫). But his mother doesn't have enough money for a trip there. So she tricks (欺骗) him by taking him to a place in Hong Kong. The place has a sign, and it says "Go to the Maldives". It makes McDull very happy. He thinks he is really in the Maldives!

Train, plane or bus?
LIU Chengbi can't wait to celebrate the Spring Festival. The 14-year-old boy in Beijing wants to see his grandmother in Sichuan. "I am busy with study. I don't have time to visit her," he said. "But during Spring Festival, we should be together."
Liu is not alone. Millions of Chinese people work or study away from their hometowns. Most of them are college students and migrant workers (民工). Spring Festival is the most important time for them to see their families. At the end of each year, they get ready to go home.
During the 2007 Spring Festival, people will make 2.7 billion (十亿) trips. Are there enough trains or ships? Last Spring Festival, 4,500 more trains were added. But it was still not enough. Usually, a train can hold about 2,000 people. But some trains held almost 5,000!
This year, the Government (政府) says they will add more trains, buses, ships and planes. They want to make sure people can go home safely. College students and migrant workers will have their own special trains.
How will you get home?
This Spring Festival, Chinese people will make 2.7 billion trips. How many people will take trains? How many will go by ships, buses or planes?

Wild boy player
HIS obvious love for the game has made Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo one of the most popular football players in Europe.
On December 30, he showed his brilliant footwork by scoring two goals to help his team beat Reading. It was Manchester United's (曼联) third win in a row. This put the team at the top of the Premiership.
