[二册]Offering One’s Seat
Offering One’s Seat to the elder in Foreign Countries? No!
In China, it is considered to be very polite and well-educated to offer one’s seat to the elder, while in foreign countries, it is not necessarily the same…
I have heard about stories from my friend who had the opportunity to travel around in the U.S. By the end of his story, what I wanted to say was: I really should have warned you of this!
He was taking a bus in Boston to meet a friend downtown when a seemingly old man got on. The passengers around him were still reading newspapers, talking or enjoying a nap. He felt it his best manners to offer the seat to the old man, so he stood up and asked him to take the seat. But the old man didn’t and replied angrily: Sir, I don’t have to take your seat, ain’t I in a good shape? He felt so strange and murmured “Shouldn’t I offer my seat to the old?” On hearing this, the man cried out: Oh, gosh, am I already old? I am 35! And actually the man with gray hair was even younger than my friend himself!
